Where in the Parks is Owlexander?

Follow the riddles and clues left at parks each Friday in May to catch this Park District hero turned sneaky character! He snatched up all of the trilobites (Ohio’s state fossil) in the Miami Valley to keep for his personal collection. If the trilobites aren’t put back in place, we won’t be able to enjoy them in the parks!

The first clue will be presented on the Centerville-Washington Park District Facebook page on Friday, May 7. Or, register here to receive clues via email and get your family started on this park adventure! All ages.

National Kids to Parks Day

Saturday, May 15, 8:00 a.m.-9:00 p.m.

This national day of play connects kids and families with their local, state, and national parks, creating the next generation of outdoor enthusiasts! Head to your favorite Centerville-Washington Park District park and share your adventure by posting an action photo on the Centerville-Washington Park District Facebook page! Post your pictures on the post about Kids to Parks Day to enter to win a $25 Graeter’s gift card! Pictures must be posted by 11:59 p.m. on May 15 and must be in a CWPD park.

Living Wreath with Ivy Dayton

By using a combination of aerobic dance movements, fast and slow rhythms, resistance training, balance and mat work, Cardio Combo classes help you burn calories; improve cardiovascular performance; strengthen core, upper and lower body; and enhance coordination. Taught by experienced dance fitness instructor, Janet Hartsock. Bring water and weights. Ages 18 and up.

Participants will have an introduction with the instructor before heading out on the marked path for a self-guided adventure. Hike is on a natural path. Ages 3 – 6 with adult companion. Staggered start times.

Cardio Fit combines both high and low-impact moves with a dance twist. Get your heart rate up and break a sweat while having fun. This workout is easy to learn and suitable for all fitness levels. Taught by dance fitness instructor, Janet Hartsock. Ages 18 and up.

Let’s get together to read a story! We will act out the plot with active games, sing songs with sensory themes and take short hikes in the park — sparking a love of nature in our youngest community members! This program is limited to one adult companion per registrant. Ages 18 months – 4 years with adult companion.

Painting in the Landscape

Join local artist Kristin Bailey from Decoy Art Center for an evening on the covered porch learning the art of “en plein air” painting. Enjoy fresh air and the calming sights of the park prairie. All materials are included. Ages 18 and up.

With daylight hours running long, this stargaze is for the night owls! Take time to look at the skies in wonder! Local astronomers will have their telescopes set up for participants to take a closer look at planets and stars. Ages 18 and up.

We have a lot of native flowers to plant and could use your help! We will learn the names and the benefits of what we are planting. Participants will get to pick a plant for their own yard as a thank you! Certificates for service hours provided upon request. Ages 12 – 17.

Nature Design Challenges: DIY!

These kits provide a fun-filled afternoon of science and engineering using materials from nature. Participants will receive a surprise STEM challenge in the kit that will have them plan, build and test their own designs. One kit per month that will feature a new challenge. Best for ages 7 – 13.

A Walk in the Park

Get outdoors, enjoy sunshine and fresh air while meeting other walking enthusiasts. These are self-guided walks around your community parks! Walking helps maintain a healthy weight, increases energy, lifts your spirits, strengthens memory and protects from heart disease and high blood pressure. Locations vary. Ages 18 and up.

Early Adventures: Big Bend Park

These exploratory hikes foster curiosity and confidence in young children. Groups will be broken up to meet the current gathering guidelines and are led by Park District staff and volunteers. Ages 0 – 4 years with adult companion.
