The park is named in honor of Robert F. Mays, who made the largest donation in Park District history in order to significantly fund the park’s development. Bob Mays raised his family in Washington Township, and the parks were a big part of their everyday lives. “My family spent many enjoyable hours in our local parks as the kids were growing up,” said Bob Mays. “We have always felt proud of the value our parks bring to the community, and I feel fortunate to be able to support park growth.”

Bob passed away July 6, 2016 at the age of 87. “The Centerville-Washington Park District is proud that Bob’s legacy can live on through this high-quality community recreational area,” said Arnie Biondo, director of the Park District.
