“Ask Me 3” Understanding Medical Language
When you do not understand something your doctor or
health-care provider tells you, do not be shy about asking questions. Getting
answers to these three simple questions can help you actively participate in
your own health care and may improve the outcome and overall satisfaction:
1. What is my main problem? 2. What do I need to do? 3. Why is it
important for me to do this?
Repeat instructions back to your
health-care providers. This will let them know that you heard correctly and
give them a chance to clarify anything that needs further explanation.
