If you’re overweight, losing just five to 10 pounds can help lower your risk. Regular activity – 30 minutes of brisk activity at least five days a week – and a healthy diet also protect against diabetes.
People over age 45 should have a fasting blood glucose test to screen for diabetes. Overweight people and those with other risk factors may need earlier screening. Diabetes is also more common among African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, Asian Americans, and Pacific Islanders.
