Nutrition Tip of the Month

Eat Like Your Ancestors

Returning to a diet like your ancestors ate may help prevent diabetes. For most people that means eating a wide variety of plant and animal foods and limiting refined sugar, white flour, and fat.

Studies have directly linked the high rate of diabetes among Native Americans to when refined foods were introduced to their diet. Researchers have also found that the high rate of diabetes among native Hawaiians dropped dramatically when they returned to their traditional diet and stopped eating white rice, macaroni, and canned ham.
