Full-time Employment

Position:  Naturalist

Salary: $29,100 with benefits

Anticipated Starting Date: June 2008

Illustrative Duties: Full-time position. Responsible for developing, conducting, and evaluating Park District nature programs, including children’s monthly nature series, public discovery walks, senior programs, Jr. and Sr. Naturalist program, in-school programs, and adult workshops. Supervises seasonal naturalist intern. Engages in roving interpretation. Maintains nature collections. Assists with any and all Park District programs as needed. Reports to the Outdoor Education Coordinator.

Agency Information: A park district operating 45 parks in a growing suburban area (population approximately 53,000). The Park District includes large natural areas, small neighborhood parks, and athletic complexes. 

Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in Parks & Recreation, Interpretation, Environmental Education, or related field. One to three (1-3) years nature programming experience. Background and knowledge in natural history and environmental education concepts. Exceptional communication skills. Ability to work as part of a team and independently. Must be insurable by Park District insurance to operate vehicles. Familiarity with computers and RecNet software program a plus. A valid Ohio driver’s license is required.

Seasonal Employment

Summer Recreation Leader positions are still available for summer 2008. Park Operations Technician, Day Camp Counselor, and Recreation Assistant positions have been filled.

The following seasonal positions are available to qualified applicants 18 years of age and older. (16 & 17 year-olds may apply for assistant camp counselor and assistant recreation leader positions)

Recreation Assistant - (May-August or September) Duties include program registration, general office duties, and assisting program and operation staff for park events. Approximately 30 hours per week, schedule is negotiable. Applicants must be in good physical condition, computer literate, and reliable, with good customer service skills.
$7.15-$9.00 per hour

Park Operations  Technician - (March-November) Duties include mowing, trimming, painting, and general field and trail maintenance. Approximately 32-40 hours per week. Schedule includes occasional weekends, evenings, and holidays.
$7.15-$14.85 per hour

Program Coordinator - (June-August) Includes training and supervising staff, coordinating special events, maintaining program records and supplies, delivering supplies to program sites, and public relations. Proven experience with children's programs, supervisory skills, excellent organization and communication skills required. Includes some evenings and holiday work.
$8.25-$10.10 per hour

Day Camp Counselor  - (June-August or Saturdays in February) Work with children ages 3-12 at nature-oriented day camp. Proven experience with children's programs and an interest in the natural environment required. 
$7.15-$9.00 per hour Counselors (ages 18+)
$7.00-$7.85 per hour Assistant Counselors (ages 16 &17)

Summer Recreation Leader  - (June-August) Work with children ages 3-12 in the outdoor recreation program. Proven experience with children's programs and reliable transportation required. 
$7.15-$9.00 per hour Leaders (ages 18+)
$7.00-$7.85 per hour Assistant Leaders (ages 16 &17)

Summer Naturalist Intern  - (June-August) Work with children in summer nature programs, train counselors in outdoor education concepts, develop and lead programs for campers. Previous nature programming experience, exceptional skills in organization and communication required. Current enrollment in natural resource or related program preferred.
$7.75-$8.75 per hour plus college credit

Volunteer Opportunities

Become a Volunteer Naturalist

Do you have:
An interest in the environment and nature?
A desire to learn more about the natural world?
A desire to share this knowledge and interest with children?
A concern for the environment?
An interest in community involvement and service?

If so, we are looking for you. Opportunities exist for adult volunteers to lead one hour long hikes for preschoolers and scout groups. The Park District will provide two training sessions to familiarize you with the concepts to be shared. Becoming a volunteer is fun and rewarding!

Youth volunteers must be at least 14 years old

Winter Woods Day Camp  - Assist counselors in exploring Grant Park with children ages 3-12 on the Saturdays in February.

Bluebird Box Monitor - Monitor box usage by bluebirds and competing species during the spring and summer.

Summer Programs - Help with summer park programs for children including Hidden Meadows Day Camp, Summer Recreation Program and Preschool Play Yard.

Headquarters Projects  - Assist at the Park District Headquarters with various office and educational projects.

Afterschool Programs  - Assist with outdoor programs designed for children from preschool to fifth grade.

Mini Trail and Haunted Trail  - Share the wonder of Halloween with small children or scare the daylights out of older children and adults.

School Programs  - Assist with in-class presentations at local schools.

Group Projects  - Your group helps with a project in a park.
