Creating Community Connections
Multi-Use Trail Plan
A task force was formed based upon input collected during the Create The
Vision process where residents expressed desire to establish safe trails for
non-motorized transportation. The task force was a cooperative effort
between the Park District, City of Centerville, and Washington Township with
representatives from these agencies and local residents. The goal was to
develop a plan to be adopted by the three local government entities.
Multi-use trails can be in the form of a widened designated bike lane, a
paved shoulder area, a shared sidewalk, or a separate paved trail. Studies
show that trail development stimulates local economies, increases local tax
revenue, attracts tourists seeking new recreational opportunities, and
revitalizes business districts. Trails also promote health and fitness by
providing an enjoyable and safe place for bicycling, walking, jogging, etc.
A survey was distributed throughout the community. After compiling the
information provided by survey respondents and additional comments collected
at the open house held in July 2005, the task force prepared a draft plan.
Several north-south and east-west corridors were identified and specific
trails have been mapped.
A multi-use trail plan can be comprised of several
different types of trails. All of these types will be utilized within our
new trail system. By far the most requested type of trail by residents was a
separate paved trail. However, with most of the community already developed,
it is not always possible to construct this type of trail. There will be
areas that provide a shared sidewalk and several already exist within the
City and Township. Another type of trail is a marked bike route. These
trails will be marked through various neighborhoods where main arteries are
too busy or congested to safely route alternative transportation.
The Centerville City Council, the Washington Township Trustees, and the
Board of Park Commissioners have all adopted the plan. Each government
entity is responsible for implementing the plan within its jurisdiction.
