Exercise Tip of the Month
Yoga and Lower Back Pain
Practicing
yoga may help ease chronic lower back pain, according to a study funded by
the National Institutes of Health. Participants who took yoga classes twice
a week for two months reported they had less pain, were able to move more
freely, and had fewer symptoms of depression than people in the same study
who continued whatever medical therapy or treatment they had been doing.
People suffering from lower back pain often stop exercising, and their
muscles become deconditioned. Yoga seems to help reverse muscle weakening
because it concentrates on strengthening the core muscles in the back and
stomach which is critical for people with lower back pain.
